About the Index & Survey

The Greater Lansing Business Index and Survey luncheon series provides a uniquely local perspective on the mid-Michigan economy. Area experts present key statistics and insight that can be applied immediately to make important business decisions.

The Greater Lansing Business Index, supported by Capitol National Bank, interprets major economic indicators, including employment figures, home sales, manufacturing production, power usage and much more, as they relate to mid-Michigan and as they change from one quarter to the next. At each event, David G. Sowerby, CFA, a regular guest on WJIM's Chris Holman Show and portfolio manager for Loomis, Sayles & Company, LP, presents a comprehensive analysis of mid-Michigan’s economy.

To complement the index information, a key component of the event is a survey, designed and presented by Ed Sarpolus, vice president and founding partner of EPIC/MRA, the most quoted source of survey research in Michigan. Supported by ALLTEL, the surveys evaluate consumer and business spending on alternate quarters.

Other area experts rotate as guest speakers to provide additional perspectives. Past speakers include Rob Fowler of the Small Business Association of Michigan, John Pearson of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, Larry Meyer of the Michigan Retailers Association and Robert B. Duncan of The Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University.
