Fitness and Health

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthlyI don't know of an issue whose timeliness is more precise than this one.

The holidays have come and gone, the days of gluttony and over-indulgence are over. Now the spring vacation season is on the horizon and we are all keenly aware of how we will look in our bathing suits.

If you have checked out the parking at your local health club you will understand that it was easy to get in there in December, but not so easy to get in there now. As a matter of fact, getting parking at all is a challenge. We all know health is the most important thing we have, and we can take better care of our professional and family lives if we're fit—when we aren't, those areas suffer and drag on us.

I haven't ever seen a study, but my guess is that if you're fit, you are more likely to smile each day. Fitness comes in many different forms and means something different to each of us. I have to say that fitness is a system that better promotes blood flow, oxygenation, and so on—these are the things that keep our bodies moving forward and lucid and for the most part, keeps them happy.

For some, fitness means the piece of mind that comes from a yoga class. For others it is simply the many health benefits. No matter what your definition of fitness, in this issue you'll find a variety of sources and industry leaders. Utilize them, because health and wellness actually do have a number that adds to it—a cost to our everyday lives. The cost of healthcare to business is a very real number and the cost of healthcare to families is even a bigger number.

So I'd like to encourage those who are fit to stay fit. And to those who are not, don't kill it like an Olympic runner; just eat a little lighter and exercise a little more, and perhaps it will add to your benefit. The benefits are for all of us, so utilize the professionals in the market. (Though we have only scratched the surface!)

Thank you for reading this issue of GLBM and thanks for contributing to making our area a great mid-Michigan.

Have a prosperous month!
