February 2010 - A Local Evolution

So what exactly are life sciences? Are they the science of life? Well, I hope not. This commentary is not even going to address the issue and we do not have enough pages in 50 magazines to even begin to talk about the science of life!
We are bringing our readers this issue so that all can see what science and technology companies in this area are doing to effect our local economy. The fact is there has been an evolution right here in Lansing—and there are major players involved.
I can remember (and it never seems that many years ago) when the Michigan Bio-Tech Institute opened. It was cutting edge and it was one of the first facilities in mid-Michigan that focused on the life/bioscience area. No one knew what it was about, but we all knew it had to be good because Michigan State University was behind it, and turns out they were doing some pretty fantastic research and development.
Believe me, there is a whole lot more good news to come in the science and technology fields, with all the innovation taking place. We congratulate and thank each company featured this month, and remind you (as we always do), that we are only scratching the surface. There are many stories out there that you will not hear about, but are important.
I am very fortunate to have been able to see companies like Neogen grow from a simple notion—it’s now a company that is world renowned, a global market contributor. I would like to compliment Jim Herbert and Lon Bohannon for fostering core values in the people of their company.
Also, this year’s Entrepreneurial Awards of Greater Lansing are taking place on March 10th and nominations are being accepted through February 15th. If you know a business owner who is deserving of this honor, contact Stacy Adado for details at 517-487-1714 or send an e-mail to her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. All of us at the Business Monthly appreciate your continued support and wish you a very prosperous month.
