December 2007 - Wine Devine

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthlyWine Devine

If you have taken a close look at our cover photo this month, you might say we’re featuring various aspects of the wine industry in the “nick of time”! Those two fellows have been doing well in the area’s wine marketing, sales and distribution business for some time now. Bacchus (the Greek god known for his enjoyment of wine and festive occasions) would be pleased! What better time to highlight members of our area wine industry than during this busy month filled with holiday festivities?

As a single malt Scotch drinker, I must admit it took me time to develop a taste for wine.  I’m still no expert, but I do enjoy my evening glass of red wine that I’ve been told is so beneficial for my health. My appreciation of wine probably began when my wife and I toured the Napa Valley area. Learning about its production and receiving helpful tips from wine experts allowed me to realize maybe I’d been missing something after all.  I’ve learned a good glass of wine enhances a good meal, is an enjoyable addition to conversations with friends, and is a relaxing way to end a busy day. This would appear to be a major improvement from my preconceived notions about wine from my college-age years of Boone’s Farm being the only wine I recognized.

The wine industry is important in our Michigan economy. The growers, distributors, retail merchants and restaurant owners contribute not only to the financial well-being of the state’s economy, but also to bringing enjoyable tastes and pleasure to the people here.  They provide the wide varieties of wine and the ease of convenient shopping and dining choices. As you uncork this month’s issue, you’ll discover interesting articles that point out the place Michigan holds in the nation’s wine industry.

We here at The Greater Lansing Business Monthly toast you all, and wish you a very prosperous month.
