July 2011 - Becoming a Publisher

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthlyBack in the ‘80s, a man named Jim Jordan was running the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. He presented an idea about publishing a magazine. After some time passed, he said to me, “What do you think of my idea to put a business publication together?” (Keep in mind I never had a notion of doing it myself!) I decided to do enough research to determine if it would be workable, and to commence the groundwork of becoming a publisher. Of course, at that point I wasn’t quite sure what a publisher does.

I became convinced that this would be a viable publication, one that could flourish in the local market, after I spent time with leaders like Joe Reid, David O’Leary, Jack Davis, Wayne Williams and others.

Very enthused about the numbers and the research, I began taking the concept to local publishers and printers, where I received total rejection of the entire idea. But knowing my research and believing in GLBM’s probable success convinced me to publish the magazine myself. I looked up the word publisher and decided this was something I might be able to do. As it turns out, nearly 25 years later, my research proved right. The original product design was on target, and we have done (what I believe) is an excellent job of spurring the local business community, sharing good news (and struggles, too) and allowing for a flow of positive communication.

Of course, the success of a publication is dependent upon many factors, one of which—and the most important I feel—is a great staff, and this magazine is blessed with one of the finest. I would like to personally thank Sarah Wardell, who has brought GLBM to an even higher level since taking over as editor; Kathy Morse, our office manager, who keeps not only me but the entire organization on task; and Tara Peplowski, who has brought new and innovative ideas to our supportive services area. We also employ a staff of freelance writers, photographers and a copy editor; all are exceptional at what they do. Millbrook Printing and Aldinger have a major hand in producing and distributing our high-quality product and have been outstanding partners over the years.

We realize here that publishing is as much a risk as any other business. You will recognize the successful publications featured in this month’s issue. Though we understand we may have missed a few, the featured publishers are representative of our business community and are its strong supporters.

There is good reading ahead! Thanks for being part of this marvelous business community, and have a prosperous day.
