February 2005 - Integrative Medicine

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthlySeveral years ago on day 14 of a 17-day visit to Japan, I awoke with all the symptoms of the flu. I didn’t know whether to blame my illness on the fact I’d been away from home so many days, on the changes in my diet (too much sushi?), or on the resident flu germ. The important point seemed to be that I was ill and feeling miserable.

My sympathetic hosts soon arrived with some medicine they assured me would help. Well, the unfamiliar small round brown balls that looked completely unappetizing didn’t appear to me to be a likely solution. It was explained that they were an ancient remedy, organic, all natural; in other words, medicine that had been tested over time and would be very good for me.  I trusted them; I took the medicine; 12 hours later I was cheering at a baseball game and feeling well. Unbelievable! It certainly caused me to be more open to looking at new ways to become well, and remain healthy.

Most of us know that to be healthy we should stay fit, eat properly, get enough sleep—but we still need and want to interact with other people. And that’s where those winter germs come in.  During a Michigan winter, it’s more than likely that sometime you’ll catch a cold, nurse a headache, strain a muscle skiing or shoveling snow. We’ve found that there is a wide variety of help in the Greater Lansing area, both in the types of medicine to make us well and those who prescribe and deliver the remedies. It seems that fighting off maladies, especially dreary winter-related ones, is an excellent topic for this month’s magazine. We hope you have a healthy winter, with sunny days among the dreary and cold ones typical of Michigan this season.
