April 2009 - A Question of Aging?
Recently I spent some time contemplating whether aging is actually a good thing. I quickly realized there truly are many positives to be realized about adding years. Aging is a good thing if I can manage to do it gracefully, when I realize personal changes and know they can bring attributes that are personally valued and also that others value. I decided aging is decidedly a good thing for me because it has brought me to the stage of being a grandparent—realizing the circle is complete and I’m here to participate in helping to raise another new generation. Of course, aging also brings along the application for that AARP card—one takes a gulp, swallows one’s pride a bit, and decides one is totally due all those wonderful discounts the card brings with it.
On the business side of the aging issue, I discovered a definite plus. The longer a company is in business, and the more successful it is over many years, the better. Extra years in this case usually bring with them respect and admiration from customers and other businesses alike. Sure, along the way mistakes may have been made here and there, but lessons were learned from them to increase strength and stability.
As you note the cover and then page through this issue, you’ll find one of the advantages of aging is also the opportunity to celebrate the success and longevity. My two friends on the cover represent our city’s commemoration of just that. The partnership of the City of Lansing with organizations such as the Rotary Club of Lansing is “aging” at its best, helping this city to thrive when many others have not. I’ve been involved in business all over the world, and done business in the Greater Lansing area for many years—and take it from me, the Lansing community is one of the best places to have one’s business and to realize its potential to succeed. Being a viable city that is 150 years old is reason enough to celebrate, better yet the opportunity for all of us to observe our city’s successful past and its vibrant future. As you read this month’s articles, you will learn why we’re celebrating, what events are planned and when we’re doing all that celebrating. Enjoy the year’s festivities, and take a moment to applaud your part in bringing about this outstanding community’s sesquicentennial.
From all of us here at The Greater Lansing Business Monthly, have a prosperous month.
