March 2006 - Playing it Safe

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthly

Throughout our 18+ years of publishing the magazine we have featured business-related companies.  This month, we’re branching out to feature royalty in one of our articles.  That’s right—the lady on our cover is the Queen of Safety for the Greater Lansing area.  Suzy Carter is the executive director of the Lansing Area Safety Council, and ascended the safety throne when her father, our good friend Bill Carter, stepped down.  She has been a guest on my radio show and TV shows, and featured in the magazine previously, always doing an excellent job of explaining her role in the area of Lansing’s safety network.

Though we may not often stop to consider the fact, safety plays a big part in the success of our business community in a variety of ways.  Local contractors, construction companies, factories, distribution centers, and others are the recipients of awards for their outstanding safety records and ongoing programs.  We’re pleased that recognition is given for this important aspect of running a business.  The award winners have a tendency to be quite modest, as they are most interested in keeping their workers safe and healthy, productive and at work, a plus for the employees and a definite plus for the company.  Yes, safety definitely comes into play in the bottom line of a business.  As you look through this issue of the magazine, you’ll see good reason why safety is an important part of a business plan.

On another note, The Greater Lansing Business Monthly presents the 12th Annual Entrepreneurial Awards of Greater Lansing on March 15 at the Radisson Lansing Hotel. Please make plans to join us in celebrating the innovative and successful companies in mid-Michigan. For ticket information, call 517-487-1714 or visit www.lansingbusinessmonthly.com.

Have a prosperous month!
