July 2006 - Home Improvement

Chris holman - Commentary - The Greater Lansing business monthly

In this month’s magazine we are applauding the building and remodeling industry, specifically spotlighting area remodelers. They are doing well, and with good reason.

If you have ever taken on a remodeling project on your own, you may be able to relate to the story of my early attempts. We had moved into our first home, and I decided an attractive addition would be an oak bench near our picture window. I went to the local lumberyard for supplies, collected all I thought I would require for the work, and proceeded with my project. Well, after a large number of burned-out drill bits, warped boards and unaligned joints, numerous blisters, and more than the usual problems experienced by a novice remodeler and renovator, I realized this was not working out well at all. At the conclusion of the job, we had a bench that was quite serviceable and somewhat attractive; it reflected not only my efforts but also my lack of skills. I’m not sure if my wife has forgiven me to this day.

Some time later, the house, with its unique bench, was sold, and I had learned my lesson: Let the professionals do it! Our issue is filled with remodeling professionals with outstanding skills and innovative ideas to help you attain just the remodeling outcome you had hoped for, and very likely not one you could ever have achieved on your own. These fine people are representative of an industry that has a priority of building to please, and they are an important support for our mid-Michigan economy.

On another note, we have partnered with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lansing Center to host a new networking event targeted at younger professionals this summer. On select Thursdays, there will be live music, cash bar and snacks by the Lansing Center riverfront. Join us on July 6 and July 17 for Rockin’ on the Riverwalk.

As always, we wish you a very prosperous month,
