To me, the results of LASIK surgery have seemed miraculous. Several years ago before LASIK was being performed in the United States, my wife and I were on a ski lift in Aspen with a gentleman from Toronto. As we traveled up the mountain, we learned that he was one of the world’s foremost experts on LASIK surgery. He had been a guest on national television and radio shows, and featured in magazines, informing the public about this new surgery.

I was especially interested in the conversation, because only two years before this I had begun wearing glasses and was still having a heck of a time adjusting to them. At his suggestion I tried wearing contact lenses for the next few months, which still left me dissatisfied with any solution to correcting my vision. So, I corresponded with him, then interviewed him on my radio program, after which he referred me to a surgeon in Canada who performed my LASIK surgery. My experience was so successful that my wife and one of my sons were convinced and later followed my lead. They, however, were able to have the procedure done right here in mid-Michigan at Lansing Ophthalmology.

My story is similar to many that can be told by the people featured in this issue. The articles are intriguing and informative. They highlight services that many of you have also found to be personally helpful, or perhaps will present a variety of possibilities to explore that will make your life more comfortable. It is satisfying to know that these resources are available in our area.

In addition to introducing you to this month’s features, I also am taking this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the recent Greater Lansing Business Showcase. It was a huge success, with over 120 exhibitors at the show in the Lansing Center; a lot of networking and a lot of commerce took place in an exciting and positive atmosphere. This is just the type of activity from which area businesses can benefit. We are very proud to have been the instigators of this particular showcase. This was our second year, and we plan that it will be around and improved every year for a long time.
